Fall weddings in Iowa just hit different, and Bailey and Justin’s September wedding is exactly why I look forward to this season every single year. I love the cooler air and the leaves changing, and this day had it all PLUS two people who were just so genuinely happy to be getting married.

Why Fall Weddings in Iowa Are So Worth It

I have shot weddings across every season and fall just consistently gives me some of my favorite days and favorite galleries! The humidity finally breaks after a long summer, everyone is comfortable and present. Iowa looks so gorgeous this time of year with the leaves turning and the light getting warmer and softer as the season shifts.

There’s also this really relaxed vibe that fall weddings tend to have that I love so much. Nobody is rushing to beat the heat and couples seem to actually slow down and enjoy the day in a way that shows up so naturally in photos. These two got to have a slow morning getting ready, spend time with their wedding party, have a first look, and it was so intimate. The fall vibe made it feel even more special!

The Details, the Girls, and Everything That Made This Fall Wedding Day Special

Bailey’s details were honestly some of my favorites. Her veil, the bows on her dress, the fall colors woven through everything she chose, it was all just so perfectly her and so perfectly this day. Then getting to watch her get ready, surrounded by her girls, just made the whole morning feel so warm and special. There’s something about that sweet moment of anticipation before a wedding when everyone is together and excited, reality hasn’t fully hit yet, that just photographs so genuinely. I love it every single time. Bailey’s bridesmaids were so overjoyed for her and it showed in every single photo!

The leaves changing outside Floyd County Fairgrounds in Charles City added a gorgeous natural backdrop that tied everything together so beautifully. Bailey’s details were such a dream to capture and I think they tell such a beautiful story about who she is and what this day meant to her!

The Ceremony and Couple Portraits

The ceremony was just so sweet! You could feel how much everyone there loved Bailey and Justin and that is always my favorite kind of wedding day. A room full of people who are just so happy to be there celebrating! One of my favorite moments was when they did their brand during the ceremony. I love when couples add a unique personal tradition like that. It makes the ceremony feel so specifically theirs and I think it is such a special touch!

Portrait time was so fun too! We got some really beautiful fall photos with all that gorgeous September color around us. Bailey and Justin were just so natural and relaxed together and it made everything feel so easy. Those are always my favorite portraits. When couples are just having fun and not thinking about the camera at all it shows so much in the photos!

I also loved their color palette so much. The champagne bridesmaid dresses, the florals, all of it was so simple but so elevated at the same time. It just worked perfectly with the season and the venue and tied the whole day together in the perfect way!

What to Know Before Planning a Fall Wedding in Iowa

Since fall weddings in Iowa are my most requested season, I get a lot of questions about what to expect! Here is what I always tell couples.

Peak fall color in Iowa typically hits between mid-October and early November. It moves fast! One week the leaves are perfect and the next they are gone. If you want that full fall color moment, book early. Fall dates go so much faster than people expect!

Iowa fall weather is wonderfully unpredictable and I want couples to feel good about that! Overcast days photograph so beautifully. Some of my favorite fall wedding galleries came from cloudy days. The soft light is so flattering and most couples end up loving it even more than they expected. Just trust the season!

My biggest tip for fall wedding couples is to slow down and actually be in it. Fall has this natural coziness that invites you to savor everything a little more. What to Look for in a Fall Wedding Venue in Iowa

Choosing the right venue makes such a big difference for a fall wedding! There are a few things worth thinking about before you book.

First, think about the surrounding landscape! Floyd County Fairgrounds had the most gorgeous trees changing all around it. That natural backdrop did so much for the photos without anyone having to do anything extra. A venue with mature trees, open fields, or water nearby gives you so much to work with in the fall!

Natural light is the other big one. Fall light is so beautiful but it shifts fast. A venue with big windows or open outdoor spaces makes such a difference in how your photos feel!

Character matters too! Fall weddings feel so good in spaces that already have warmth and texture built in. Barns, fairgrounds, historic buildings, rustic modern spaces, they all just complement the season so naturally.
