Summer Engagement Photo Outfits for Couples Who Want to Keep It Simple

Every couple I work with asks some version of the same question before their session: what do we actually wear? And I get it, because outfit planning can spiral fast into a whole thing if you let it. But Isabelle and Trevor’s sunset session at Ada Hayden Heritage Park in Ames, Iowa, is such a good reminder that summer engagement photo outfits don’t have to be complicated to look incredible. Two outfit changes, simple pieces, a gorgeous Iowa summer evening, and that was genuinely all they needed.

If you’re in the middle of the outfit spiral right now, this one’s for you!

Why Simple Summer Engagement Photo Outfits Always Win

There’s this pressure to have the most curated, Pinterest-perfect outfits for your engagement session, and I really want to push back on that. Don’t get me wrong, Pinterest is the place to find all the inspo, but the couples whose photos feel the most natural and alive are almost never the ones who overthought every detail. They’re the ones who showed up in something they actually felt good in and then just focused on being together.

For summer engagement photo outfits specifically, simple works so well because summer already does a lot visually. The light is golden and warm, the greenery is rich, and the sky is doing incredible things, especially at sunset. Your outfits don’t need to compete with any of that; they just need to complement it. Soft colors, natural fabrics, nothing too stiff or formal, and you’re honestly most of the way there.

Isabelle and Trevor’s First Look: Light Green Summer Dress and Casual Denim

Isabelle’s first outfit was a light green summer dress, and it was perfect for the setting in every way. Light green against the deep Iowa summer greenery at Ada Hayden felt so natural and cohesive without blending in or disappearing. It moved beautifully, felt relaxed and romantic at the same time, and in the golden evening light, that color just glowed.

Trevor kept it simple the whole session in jeans, boots, and a t-shirt, and honestly, that’s one of my favorite things a guy can do for an engagement session. It’s comfortable, natural, and always looks good in the photos! The combination of her light dress against his casual denim created this really nice balance between romantic and relaxed that ran through the whole first set of photos.

For summer engagement photo outfits, this pairing is such a good reference point. A flowy dress in a soft, natural color, plus casual, well-fitted basics for both of you, is a combination that just works every single time.

The Outfit Change: Brown Dress With Sandals

Isabelle’s second outfit was a brown dress with sandals, and the shift in energy between the two looks was so fun to shoot. Where the light green felt airy and soft, the brown felt warmer and more grounded, which fit perfectly as the sun started to drop lower and the light got richer toward the end of the session.

Brown tones in summer engagement photo outfits are so underrated. They pick up warm light in a way that feels earthy and romantic without trying too hard, and against the lake and trail backdrop at Ada Hayden, they looked so good. The sandals kept the whole look feeling relaxed and summer-appropriate rather than overly dressed up, which matched Trevor’s casual vibe perfectly and kept the photos feeling cohesive across both looks.

Why Ada Hayden Heritage Park Is Such a Good Spot for a Summer Session

Ada Hayden Heritage Park in Ames is one of those Iowa locations that just keeps giving for engagement photos. The lake, the open walking paths, the tall grasses, the wide open sky — there’s so much natural variety without having to travel between multiple locations. And for a summer sunset session, the light over the water in the evening is genuinely some of the prettiest you’ll find anywhere in central Iowa.

Quick Tips for Choosing Your Summer Engagement Photo Outfits

Since outfits come up in literally every single pre-session conversation I have, here’s the short version of what I always tell couples:

Stick to soft or muted tones rather than very bright or very dark colors.

Summer light is already warm and saturated, and softer tones work with that rather than against it. Think dusty blues, sage greens, warm neutrals, terracottas, soft whites.

Make sure you can actually move.

Flowing fabrics, relaxed fits, nothing that restricts you or that you have to think about constantly. If you’re tugging at something every five minutes, it’s going to show in the photos.

Let both of your outfits complement each other without being too matchy.

Isabelle and Trevor weren’t matchy at all, but their outfits felt like they belonged together because they were in the same general color family and both leaned casual rather than formal. That’s the sweet spot.

Bring an outfit change if you want variety.

Even one swap gives your gallery a completely different feel and makes the session more fun. It doesn’t have to be dramatic; even a color change makes a difference.
