The Davenports’ summer wedding at The District Venue in Ankeny will always have a special place in my heart. I had already gotten to pray over them through the whole planning season and show up for their engagement session, so by the time wedding day came around, I already knew how special these two were. Walking into The District knowing their story, knowing how they love each other, made the whole day feel so different than just showing up to photograph a wedding.
That’s honestly one of my favorite things about getting to do both the engagement session and the wedding. You already know them by the time the big day comes, and that changes everything about how the photos feel. If you want to see where it all started, their engagement session is one of my absolute favorites.

The District Venue in Ankeny is one of those spaces that just works for a summer wedding without couples having to stress about every moving piece. The interior is clean and modern, the layout flows really naturally, and having catering, bar service, a ceremony space, and a coordinator all in one place means the day feels seamless rather than scattered. Couples can actually be present instead of managing logistics on one of the most important days of their lives, and that makes such a difference in how the whole day feels and photographs.
For a summer wedding in Iowa, the indoor setup also matters more than people realize. Heat and humidity are just part of the deal here, and knowing your guests are comfortable while you’re still getting gorgeous natural light is a really good combination. The District handles all of that without anyone having to overthink it.

The moments that end up mattering most on a wedding day are almost never the ones anyone planned for. Summer weddings have this energy that makes everything feel alive, and the Davenports’ day had that in the best way. The quiet moments between the big ones, the way their people showed up for them, the small in-between things that nobody choreographed but that ended up meaning everything.
That’s what I’m always paying attention to as an Iowa wedding photographer. Not manufacturing anything, just being ready when it happens. The details were gorgeous, and the venue looked incredible, but those small, real moments are the ones that carry the most weight when couples look back years later. Legacy-filled photos are always the goal, and summer weddings at venues like The District make that feel so natural.

One of the best things about a summer wedding in Iowa is just how much light you have to work with. Golden hour in June, July, and August can stretch well past eight in the evening, which means even with a full ceremony and reception, there’s usually still gorgeous light waiting at the end of the night if you plan for it.
Making sure the portrait time lines up with that golden window makes such a difference, and summer weddings are honestly the easiest season to make that happen. The light during that hour does things that are just hard to replicate, no matter how good your editing is. If you’re planning a summer wedding and haven’t thought about how your timeline lines up with sunset yet, it’s worth a conversation with your photographer before anything gets finalized. A lot of those same timing principles apply to engagement sessions, too, which you can read more about timing on my blog, When to Take Engagement Photos: What Nobody Actually Tells You.

Getting to photograph both the Davenports’ engagement session and their summer wedding is one of my favorite things about this job. By the time wedding day comes around, you already know how they laugh, how they lean into each other, what makes them light up. Walking into their wedding already knowing all of that makes every single moment feel more natural because the trust was already there long before we ever got to their wedding day. Plus, it makes the couple feel 10x more relaxed when they already know the photographer!
That connection genuinely changes how wedding photos turn out, and you can read more about why over at this blog on how trusting your photographer leads to better candid photos. For Iowa couples still on the fence about doing an engagement session, it’s worth the read!
