The Best Iowa Venues That Work Perfectly as Winter Wedding Venues

Winter weddings in Iowa are so underrated and I think a big part of that is because couples assume their venue options get limited when the temperature drops. But some of my favorite venues to photograph at are the ones that come alive in the colder months from the warm lighting in the venues, the cozy indoor spaces, and moody vibe that winter brings. The right venue makes a winter wedding feel intentional and romantic rather than just cold, and Iowa has so many good ones worth knowing about. Here are five of my favorite venues that worked so well in other seasons, but also perfectly as winter wedding venues!

Highpoint Event Center — Clarence, Iowa

Highpoint Event Center in Clarence is one of those venues that has a moody warm quality to it no matter what season you’re in. When I shot the Bates wedding there, it obviously wasn’t a winter wedding at all but honestly their whole aesthetic like the green palette, the white florals, the warm wood tones, the brick walls, etc. would have felt so at home in the winter months. Nothing about that day felt like it needed sunshine or greenery to work and that is exactly what makes a great winter wedding venue here in Iowa.

The character of the building does the heavy lifting and the couples who lean into that always end up with something really special. You can see more from the Bates wedding over on my blog, A Modern Wedding Venue in Iowa: Highpoint Event Center in Clarence!

Willow on Grand — Des Moines, Iowa

Sam and Zach’s wedding at Willow on Grand was one of those days where everything felt classic, intentional, and timeless from the very beginning and that’s exactly why it works so well as a winter wedding venue. They also switched it up and did a church ceremony and then the reception at Willow on Grand which was perfect and would work well in any season!

Nothing about their day depended on a specific season to feel complete; it was refined without being stiff, elegant without being overdone, and the whole space just held their day so well. That kind of venue works in January just as well as it works in June and I think couples who choose it for a winter wedding are going to love it. 1868 Farmhouse — Boone, Iowa

1868 Farmhouse in Boone is honestly one of my favorite venues in Iowa and I’ve shot everything there from a moody elevated styled shoot to a super colorful summer wedding with bright bridesmaids and both felt completely at home in the space. That versatility is what makes it such a great winter wedding venue because it doesn’t need a specific season or aesthetic to work, it just works with whatever you want your wedding to look like. A deep green winter palette with rich florals and candlelight would look so incredible there, the possibilites are endless. You can see more from the old money styled shoot I shot at 1868 Farmhouse on this blog: An Old Money Wedding at 1868 Farmhouse and Why Trends Can Still Age Well! Eagles Ledge — Madrid, Iowa

Eagles Ledge in Madrid gets so overlooked for winter weddings and Nyssa and Austin’s fall wedding there is honestly the reason I keep recommending it! The entire day was filled with joy and every detail came together so well with the golden leaves, warm hues, a sparkler exit, portraits under the cafe lights outside, etc. all of it in freezing temperatures with strong winds. And it was still so gorgeous! That experience really showed me how capable this space is when the weather gets unpredictable which is exactly what you need in a winter wedding venue.
