Most couples get engaged and immediately start thinking about venues, guest lists, and dresses, and then, somewhere around four months before the wedding, realize they never scheduled their engagement session. It happens constantly, and it’s one of those things that seems fine until it isn’t! As an Iowa engagement photographer, the number one thing I wish couples knew earlier in the planning process is that when you take engagement photos matters a lot more than most people think, and the answer is almost always sooner than you’re planning.

My top recommendation: book your engagement session three to twelve months before your wedding! That range exists because the right timing depends on a few things—like whether you need photos for save the dates, which season you want, and how backed up photographers are in your area!
If you’re sending save the dates, work backwards from that mailing date and give yourself at least six to eight weeks after the session for editing and delivery. If save-the-dates aren’t part of your plan, you have more flexibility, but that doesn’t mean waiting until the last minute! Engagement photoshoots book out fast, especially in spring and fall when every couple in Iowa is trying to get outside at the same time. The earlier you lock it in, the more options you have for dates, locations, and timing.

Iowa gives you four genuinely different seasons to work with, and each one produces a completely different set of photos. Here’s my honest breakdown:
Spring: Everything is green and blooming, the light is super soft, and temperatures are actually comfortable. March through May books up fast because everyone wants it! If you’re a spring wedding couple, this is also a great time to do your session so the photos feel cohesive with your wedding aesthetic.
Summer: Long evenings and golden hour that lasts forever. The tradeoff is heat and harsh midday light, so summer sessions work best when scheduled in the evening! If you can get out around seven or eight at night in July, the light is some of the best of the entire year for outdoor engagement photos! For more outdoor shoot ideas.
Fall: Probably the most popular season by far! Warm tones, cooler temps, incredible color in the right spots. If you want a fall session, book it in late summer because September and October fill up faster than any other time of year.
Winter: I think winter is the most underrated season for engagement photos. Minimal competition for dates, clean open landscapes, and a moodier aesthetic that looks completely different from every other couple’s session on Instagram. If you’re not tied to a specific look, winter is definitely worth it!

The most common mistake isn’t waiting too long on the calendar; it’s not accounting for how far out photographers book out! Popular Iowa engagement photographers can be booked four to six months in advance during peak season. If you get engaged in December and want a May session with a specific photographer, you might be reaching out just in time. If you wait until March to start looking, that photographer might already be full.
The second mistake is choosing a season based on aesthetics alone without thinking about your actual wedding timeline. If your wedding is in June and you do your engagement photos the October before, that gallery is going to feel like a different vibe entirely by the time you’re walking down the aisle! Especially if you are having your engagement shoot photos on any signage at your wedding! Timing your engagement session two to four months before the wedding keeps everything feeling connected. You’ll look like yourselves, your relationship will feel current, and the photos will actually represent where you are right now!

I can’t stress this enough: book before you feel ready! Couples who wait until they have everything figured out almost always end up rushing or compromising on something. Your photographer can help you figure all of that out once the date is on the calendar. The date is the only thing you actually need to decide first.

Should our engagement photos match our wedding vibe?
They don’t have to match perfectly, but they should feel like you! If your wedding is black tie formal, and your engagement session is barefoot in a field, there’s going to be a slight disconnect! Between your wedding website, save the dates, and guest book, etc., you want everything to feel cohesive. Unless you’re specifically wanting a different vibe, it’s always better to keep it similar!
What if we get engaged in winter but want outdoor photos?
Winter outdoor sessions are genuinely underrated, with open fields, clean light, and almost no competition for photographer availability. Bundle up, embrace the season, and you’ll end up with photos that look nothing like everyone else’s. If you really can’t stomach the cold, booking now for a spring session is the move!
Can we do our engagement session after we’ve already sent save the dates?
Absolutely, not every couple uses engagement photos for save the dates, and that’s completely fine. The session is still worth doing as a way to get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day! Always work with your photographer in a low-stakes setting, and just have photos of this season of your relationship. Those reasons don’t have a deadline.
What time of day is best for engagement photos?
Golden hour!!!! The hour or two before sunset is the sweet spot for outdoor sessions almost every single time. The light is warm, soft, and super forgiving! It photographs in a way that’s hard to replicate at any other time of day. Check the sunset time for your session date and plan to start shooting about ninety minutes before it hits. If you plan a shoot with me, I will always help you plan the best time!
Does the location affect when we should schedule?
A ton! Certain locations peak at specific times of year. If you have your heart set on a location with fall foliage, you’ve got about a two to three week window in Iowa before the leaves are gone. If you want a specific wildflower field or a location that floods in spring, timing is everything. Talk to your photographer about what locations look like at different times of year before you lock anything in.

If you’re looking for an Iowa engagement photographer who will help you find the right timing, the right location, and make the whole experience feel way less overwhelming than Pinterest makes it look, I’d love to connect with you! Engagement photos should feel like a season you actually want to remember, not something you rushed through to check off a list.
