There’s something so special about outdoor wedding venues in Iowa! The sunshine, the open sky, the soft breeze that shows up right when you need it — it all just makes the day feel extra special and unique. And as an Iowa wedding photographer who has photographed so many love stories across this beautiful state, I’m convinced God puts a little extra sparkle on outdoor wedding days. I mean, the glow? The colors? I’m obsessed and always so grateful that this is my job!

If you’re dreaming of getting married outside and want a day that feels joyful, intentional, and so unique to you, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about choosing outdoor wedding venues in Iowa, plus some sweet moments from the Mullins’ gorgeous day at Eagles Ledge!

Outdoor wedding venues in Iowa bring all the goodness, like:
There’s something about the fresh air and golden light that makes the whole day feel more relaxed. The Mullins did have their reception indoors, but they really wanted to let the outdoor side of the venue shine, and it was so beautiful! When you mix that with meaningful moments, prayer, and your people all in one special place, it’s a recipe for the sweetest wedding day!

Outdoor weddings don’t have to be complicated, but they do take a tiny bit of planning. Here are the big things to keep in mind:
Rain? Heat? Wind? I’ve definitely seen it all! But with the right planning, everything can still turn out absolutely perfect.
Where your ceremony takes place matters! Soft, even light means you’ll look amazing in your photos!
Please, please, pleaaase choose a venue with a plan B! Tents, porches, indoor spaces, barns — they’re worth their weight in gold just in case there is any bad weather.
Fans, shade, bug spray, cold water, and comfy chairs make a huge difference!
Make sure grandma isn’t hiking through a field in heels. A simple walking path can truly save the day! Eagles Ledge was honestly the perfect Iowa wedding venue because it had stunning spots for everything (ceremony, bride and groom portraits, etc.), but it also has the barn. So when that afternoon wind kicked in, we were all able to escape without it interrupting the day.

Here are some things I’ve learned from photographing outdoor weddings over the years:
Whether you are having an outdoor wedding or just taking your bride and groom portraits outside, I highly recommend building in extra time for photos during golden hour! Even shifting your ceremony slightly earlier or later can give you the dreamiest portraits!
Something Chic Floral did SO good for the Mullins; the florals were soft, romantic, and sturdy enough for a little breeze!
Bella Hair Salon did amazingggg! Outdoor weddings mean movement, so secure curls and setting spray are your best friends.
Pure Bridal has so many stunning options that are comfortable and beautiful. Trust me: you’ll be grateful on the big day when you’re not fixing your dress or barely able to move around.
Outdoor ceremonies tend to naturally feel more peaceful. During the ceremony, the most beautiful moment happened when everyone surrounded the couple and prayed over their marriage. It felt holy and grounding in the best way, and it’s moments like this that remind me why I love photographing Christ-centered weddings so much!
