When couples tell me they want their engagement photos to feel different, not stiff, not overly posed, and definitely not like everyone else’s, I immediately start thinking about location. Iowa has so much more to offer than people realize, and Payton and Tanner’s session is the perfect example of how choosing unique engagement photo locations can completely transform the feel of your gallery!
We started their evening walking around Downtown North Ames, just letting them settle in, laugh, and move together naturally. There’s something about brick buildings, quiet sidewalks, and simple city backdrops that gives sessions an effortless feel. It didn’t feel staged. It felt like them. Like two people just enjoying an evening together. And then right as the light started softening, we made our way to Ada Hayden to finish the session by the water, which gave us a totally different energy without feeling disconnected from the first half of the evening.
That combination is what makes unique engagement photo locations so powerful. You’re not stuck with one backdrop or one mood. You get variety, movement, and depth without ever feeling rushed, which is always the goal!

The truth is, anyone can go to a pretty park and stand in front of a tree. But when couples intentionally choose unique engagement photo locations that reflect how they actually spend time together, the entire session feels more meaningful. North Ames gave us that elegant city shoot vibe, while Ada Hayden gave us the sunset at the park vibes! I think my favorite engagement shoot combo is when we do some photos in nature, and some in the city, plus, it’s fun to switch up your outfits for the different scenery!

What I loved most about Payton and Tanner’s session was how natural everything felt. They weren’t worried about posing perfectly or standing a certain way. They were just walking, talking, and occasionally laughing at my commentary behind the camera. That’s when the good stuff happens. When couples are comfortable enough to forget I’m even there.
If you’re still trying to decide where to take your photos, I walk through how to narrow that down in my blog, Engagement Photo Locations: How to Choose the Best Spots for Your Session

Ames really is underrated when it comes to engagement sessions. Most people immediately think of the campus, which is beautiful, but there are so many other spots that feel less expected and more relaxed. North Ames has these quiet little pockets that photograph so well, and Ada Hayden is always a favorite because of the water, the tall grasses, and the way the sunset wraps around everything.
If you’re curious about Ada Hayden specifically, you can learn more about the park here! And if you’re exploring the area for date nights or planning visits before your session, Discover Ames is actually a great resource!
The key to making these feel like truly unique engagement photo locations isn’t just showing up. It’s knowing how to use the space. We walked instead of standing still, we changed directions based on the light, and we just did whatever we felt like instead of forcing it into a checklist!

You don’t need dramatic mountains or destination views to make your session stand out. Sometimes, the best unique engagement photo locations are simply two places that contrast each other in subtle ways! And any combo works, it can be the beach and the city, a park and the city, the beach and the mountains, literally wherever you want!

That balance keeps your gallery interesting and prevents it from feeling repetitive! One of the things I love most about being an Iowa engagement photographer is helping couples see potential in places they might normally overlook.
