Fall is honestly one of my favorite seasons to shoot, and it books up the fastest every single year for such good reason! If you know Iowa in the fall, you already know exactly what I mean. The light gets this warm, moody glow, the air finally cools down after what feels like the longest Iowa summer, and everything just feels so much more cozy and rich. I genuinely look forward to fall engagement photos every year, and I never get tired of it, so if you’re considering a fall session, I just want to say yes, do it! Here is everything you need to know to make it everything you’re dreaming of!

Why Fall Is Such a Good Time for Engagement Photos in Iowa

Fall golden hour in Iowa hits differently because the sun sits lower and everything gets this warm, natural glow earlier in the evening that is just so hard to get any other time of year. Iowa doesn’t have mountains or a coastline, but fall gives us pretty fields, trails with changing leaves, and open skies that look incredible as the sun goes down. It does so much work in the background of your photos without anyone having to overthink it.

Fall outfits are also just so fun for engagement sessions! A cozy sweater, a leather jacket, a flannel, a long flowy dress with boots, you have so many more options than any other season, and it really does show in the photos. Lean into layers and warm earth tones like rust, burgundy, olive, and camel, and you honestly can’t go wrong!

When to Book and What to Expect From the Season

The window for peak fall color in Iowa is short and moves fast, typically somewhere between mid-October and early November, depending on the year. One week the leaves are perfect, and the next they’re gone, so booking early and having a backup date ready is really smart. Fall is my most requested season by far, so please don’t wait until September to reach out about an October date with any photographer because those dates go so much faster than people expect! Iowa fall weather is also wonderfully unpredictable, and I want couples to feel good about that! An overcast day photographs so beautifully and gives everything this soft, moody quality that a lot of couples end up loving even more than they expected. I have shot sessions in early snow that turned into some of my all-time favorites, so just trust the season!

Should You Do a Proposal Session, An Engagement Session, or Both?

This comes up all the time, and I just don’t think couples hear enough about it before they make a decision! There are basically three ways this plays out. Some couples do a surprise proposal with a photographer hidden nearby, capturing everything. Some book a full styled engagement session after the proposal, which is exactly what the Dominas did! And some do both, which is honestly my personal favorite because you end up with two completely different sets of photos that tell two different parts of the same story.

The proposal photos capture that raw, unscripted first moment in a way that even the most beautiful engagement session just can’t replicate. The engagement session gives you something relaxed and intentional, where you actually get to enjoy being engaged together. The Dominas chose a fall session, and it was just so them. She wore a flowy green dress and heels, and he kept it simple and casual, and the combination was so natural and easy and real. Having both is just so special, and if it works for your timeline, I genuinely think it is so worth it.

Making the Most of Your Fall Engagement Session

The couples who walk away with their favorite photos are almost always the ones who came in with zero pressure and just treated the whole thing like a fun evening out together. That sounds simple, but it makes such a real difference in how relaxed and natural everything feels on camera. A few things I always tell couples before their session: schedule for golden hour and check your sunset time before you finalize anything, because starting about an hour before sunset gives you the best light of the entire day.

Pick a location that actually means something to you, rather than somewhere that just looks pretty on Instagram, because that story always shows up in the photos. And bring a backup outfit if you can, because even a simple color change gives your gallery so much more variety and makes the session more fun!
